It's Tasty Tuesday and we've got another fabulous recipe for you!

Add some green to your meal with Eat, Live, Run's Caramelized Brussels Sprouts!

These miniature cabbages are jam packed with nutrition. They are high in fibre, protein and sulforaphane, the very same cancer fighting chemical found in broccoli. They are low in fat and, unfortunately, love. Yes, that's right. Brussels sprouts could use some more love, especially when they have so many health benefits to offer in return!

They don't have to be bland, steamed veggies! Try them the Eat, Live, Run way: caramelized and tossed with pecans! If you think you hate Brussels sprouts, this dish looks like it could change your mind.

We’re kind of obsessed with fun in the sun!

This is a great time of year to soak up some rays, play a game of beach volleyball, and enjoy a glass or two of wine on a patio with friends. The days are longer. The nights are warmer. No wonder it’s tempting to work or play outdoors a little longer than usual.

This also makes it easy to overexert yourself without even noticing you’ve progressed from simply sweating to over heating. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you enjoy some fun in the sun without over doing it!

Avoid the Burn

The sun emits UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays, which can penetrate through clouds or be reflected off of water and sand. Without protection, most people will start to burn after 10 minutes. That’s not even enough time to get in a game of bocce balls! Here’s how to avoid the harmful rays:

  • Sun Protection Clothing
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) clothing was originally sold through pharmacies but is now available everywhere. Men, women and children have a wide variety of active or lounge wear available. Personally, I prefer a big, beautiful floppy hat and flowing sundress.

  • Slip! Slop! Slap on the Sunscreen!
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that will protect you against both UVB and UVA. Check out these top-rated sunscreens with less hazardous ingredients.  Sunburns are preventable! Fair skinned people, I’m talking to you!

Sweating

Being active in a hot environment can make it hard for your body to cool itself. How? The body cools itself by sweating and then allowing the sweat to evaporate. When it’s too hot or humid for the sweat to evaporate your body is unable to cool down. So, it’s important to stay hydrated and know the warning signs so you can stay safe.

Headache

It’s always a good idea to wear a hat when you’re in the sun. If you develop a headache that won’t go away, it’s probably a good time to get out of the sun and find a place to cool down.

Nausea or dizziness

If you’re in the middle of an exciting game of Frisbee and suddenly feel faint or dizzy it could be a sign of heat overexertion. This can quickly lead to nausea or an accident if you’re doing any physical activity. It’s time to sit in the shade and possibly seek help.

Heat cramps

Heat cramps are painful, muscle cramps that are usually caused by heavy exercise in a hot environment. Playing volleyball in the sun while consuming alcohol seems like a great idea but it’s also the perfect environment for heat cramps. You can prevent heat cramps by staying well hydrated before, during and after exercise. If you do experience heat cramps find a cool place to rest and drink electrolyte replacement beverages, like Gatorade. If they don’t go away on their own, seek medical attention.

Know your limits and how to protect yourself during any exposure to the sun this summer.

See you on the patio!
